Nio Introduces New Vehicle API

With the new Vehicle API, Nio aims to create a platform that efficiently connects vehicles with third-party apps and energy systems. It is intended to provide easy integration and new opportunities for smart mobility solutions.
Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio announces the introduction of its own Vehicle API (Application Programming Interface). The interface is intended to enable seamless interaction between the OEM's vehicles and third-party software applications. With the Vehicle API, the automaker aims to reaffirm its commitment to providing intelligent and user-friendly solutions while also promoting collaboration with partners in the ecosystem.
The Vehicle API is available for all Nio models in Europe and aims to help future-proof interior technology. At the same time, it offers more flexibility and improved vehicle management. Additionally, it provides better data protection control, allowing users to determine and approve which specific data is shared with individual Nio partners. To optimally integrate vehicles into third-party ecosystems, partner companies and developers can connect with them to exchange vehicle data. This, in turn, integrates Nio's intelligent systems even more into the digital lives of users and supports optimal user experiences.

Seamless integration without additional hardware
Users could, for example, connect their vehicles with home energy systems and travel planning apps and simultaneously benefit from seamless integration with their preferred third-party ecosystems for smart charging, tax-compliant logbooks, or fleet management - all without additional hardware. To do this, users simply open the platform of the third-party ecosystem, add their vehicle, log in with their account, and confirm the connection.
“The NIO Vehicle API underscores our commitment to a user-centered ecosystem that combines innovation and accessibility. This enables both users and partners to succeed in the era of smart mobility,” explains Marius Keil, Lead Product Experience Manager at Nio. “The Vehicle API is more than just a tool - it is an invitation to developers, companies, and users to work together on a smarter, better-connected future."
Pilot project: Enode and Tronity test Nio's Vehicle API
As the first partners, the software developers Enode and Tronity are testing the Vehicle API to ensure technical functionality and optimize market launch. Enode specializes in connecting energy systems with smart devices and electric vehicles, enabling efficient energy management, optimized charging, and more sustainability. By integrating Nio's vehicles with their own energy providers and smart home ecosystems - such as Fjordkraft, E.ON, TotalEnergies, Ostrom, or Amp X - users could utilize smarter, more environmentally friendly solutions through seamless connectivity. Extensive tests in Germany and Norway are intended to ensure that the solution is tailored to regional needs. At the same time, Nio can adapt to the changing energy market, explore new opportunities, and continue to develop features that maximize user benefits.
The integration with Tronity was also developed in Europe. It offers users like fleet managers a hardware-free platform to access and manage vehicle data from Nio. The requested add-in simplifies the management of electric vehicles for private and commercial users through features such as battery monitoring, tracking of charging costs, and a tax-compliant digital logbook.
